English language and linguistics is the scientific study of language itself: its sounds, structures, meanings, and uses, and the social and historical forces that shape how it changes over time. Unlike literature-focused English degrees, this discipline asks analytical rather than interpretive questions: what sounds does English use, and how do they combine to form words? What grammatical patterns underlie the sentences we produce, and are they universal or specific to English? How does social context influence the way we speak, and how do different varieties of English evolve in different communities?
