German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and is central to the economic and cultural life of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as being a major language of scholarship and philosophy. Portuguese has an even wider global reach, spoken across Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and several other nations on four continents, making it one of the world's largest languages by number of speakers.
