About this course

History and English literature is a pairing that illuminates each discipline by placing it in dialogue with the other. History provides the contextual framework within which literature is produced, circulated, and read, while literature offers history some of its richest primary evidence: poems, novels, plays, and diaries allow us to understand how people in the past experienced and made sense of their world in ways that official records rarely capture. Together the two disciplines develop your capacity to read carefully, think critically about evidence, construct sustained arguments, and communicate clearly in writing.
