About this course

Pharmacology is the scientific study of how drugs and other chemical substances interact with living systems. It is the discipline that underlies the development of nearly every medicine in clinical use, from antibiotics and analgesics to cancer treatments and psychiatric drugs. Pharmacologists work at the intersection of chemistry and biology, investigating the mechanisms by which compounds exert their effects on cells, tissues and whole organisms, and using this knowledge to guide the design of safer and more effective therapeutic agents. It is a discipline with direct implications for human health and one that demands both rigorous scientific thinking and creative problem-solving. At the University of Keele, this five-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that builds the scientific foundations needed for degree-level study, followed by four years of pharmacology content
