Actor musicians are performers trained to act with genuine skill and psychological depth while also being capable of playing instruments, singing, and making music as part of a live dramatic performance. The role has a long history in theatre, from the commedia dell'arte tradition to Shakespeare's clowns and fools, and it has taken on new prominence in contemporary musical theatre and devised performance. Actors who can make music as part of their storytelling have a versatility that the modern performance industry values highly.
