Ecology and conservation address some of the most pressing questions of our time: how ecosystems function, how species interact with each other and their environments, and what can be done to protect biodiversity in the face of habitat loss, climate change, and human pressure on natural systems. Ecology is fundamentally a science of relationships, examining how living organisms, from microbes to large mammals, depend on and shape the environments they inhabit. Conservation applies that understanding to the practical challenge of maintaining and restoring biological diversity, requiring knowledge of both the science and the policy, management, and social contexts in which conservation decisions are made.
