French carries an extraordinary literary and philosophical heritage, is spoken across multiple continents, and retains major diplomatic and institutional significance globally. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe, carries a scientific and philosophical tradition of enormous depth, and is central to understanding European history in its full complexity.
