About this course

Mathematics and philosophy is one of the most intellectually elegant of all degree combinations, bringing together the two disciplines that have, perhaps more than any others, shaped how human beings reason and what they know. Mathematics develops the capacity for rigorous formal proof, precise logical argument, and the analysis of abstract structures with extraordinary generality and power. Philosophy asks the foundational questions that underlie all inquiry: what can we know and how, what is the nature of mathematical truth, what does it mean for a logical system to be consistent or complete, and what are the limits of formal reasoning? The two subjects are deeply connected, and the greatest mathematicians and philosophers have often found their work converging at the boundary between them. At the University of Durham, this three-year, full-time programme develops both disciplines wit
