Philosophy and Russian is a combination of unusual depth and intellectual resonance. Philosophy provides the analytical tools of logic, argumentation, and conceptual clarification that are needed to engage rigorously with the most fundamental questions that can be asked, from the nature of knowledge and morality to the structure of language and the limits of reason. Russian opens access to one of the most philosophically rich literary traditions in the world: the great Russian novels of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Turgenev are themselves works of philosophical seriousness, and Russia has produced important philosophical thought in fields ranging from political philosophy to the philosophy of language and phenomenology.
