Social anthropology and African and Black diaspora studies is a combination that brings one of the most rigorous social science disciplines together with a field of scholarship that centres the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of African peoples and their descendants around the world. Social anthropology studies human societies and cultures in their diversity, asking what it means to be human in different social and cultural contexts, and developing the methodological and theoretical tools to understand societies on their own terms. African and Black diaspora studies examines the rich and complex histories of African civilisations, the impact of the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and their afterlives, and the cultures and political movements that have emerged across the African diaspora.
