About this course

The social sciences encompass a cluster of disciplines, including sociology, politics, economics, psychology and anthropology, that share a commitment to understanding human behaviour and social organisation through systematic inquiry. Where the natural sciences study the physical world, the social sciences study the social world: the institutions people create, the inequalities they produce, the cultures they inhabit, and the collective decisions they make. A grounding in the social sciences develops your ability to ask rigorous questions about society, to gather and evaluate evidence, and to communicate your findings clearly. At the University of the Highlands and Islands this two-year full-time programme offers an introduction to the social sciences at the level of a Higher National Diploma or Certificate, providing a foundation in the core concepts and methods of the social science
