About this course

Biochemistry investigates the chemical processes that underlie all living things, examining how proteins fold and function, how energy is generated and used within cells, how genetic information is stored and expressed, and how biological molecules interact to produce the processes of life. It is one of the most dynamic areas in modern science, at the frontier of medicine, biotechnology, and our fundamental understanding of living systems. As tools for investigating biology at the molecular level become increasingly powerful, biochemistry sits at the centre of advances from new drug targets to gene therapy and synthetic biology. At the University of Sussex, this three-year full-time degree places you in the laboratory from the start of your first year, giving you hands-on practical experience alongside the conceptual content of the degree.
