Comparative literature and culture with French is a combination that situates the study of literature and culture in the broadest possible frame while also developing genuine linguistic and cultural depth in one of Europe's most important and widely spoken languages. Comparative literature examines writing across national and cultural boundaries, time periods, languages, and genres, asking what we learn about particular traditions by setting them alongside others and what the act of comparison itself reveals about how meaning is made in different contexts. French opens a literary, philosophical, and cultural tradition of extraordinary richness, from Montaigne and Racine to Balzac, Proust, and the Francophone writers of Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.
