English literature is the study of texts produced in the English language across centuries and cultures, from medieval manuscripts and Renaissance drama to Victorian novels, modernist poetry, postcolonial fiction, and contemporary experimental writing. It is a discipline that asks how language works, how narrative shapes understanding, how texts are produced and received in particular historical and social contexts, and what literature can tell us about the human experience that other forms of knowledge cannot.
