Geography and German is a combination that reflects the increasingly international character of the questions that geography addresses. Climate change, migration, economic inequality and environmental degradation are not contained by national borders, and understanding them requires both the analytical tools of geography and the linguistic and cultural knowledge needed to engage with different national and regional perspectives. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and the language of one of the world's leading economies, with deep intellectual traditions in geography, environmental science and urban planning.
