Popular music is both a commercial phenomenon and an artistic practice of extraordinary richness. Since the mid-twentieth century, it has been the dominant form of musical expression in most of the world, shaping culture, reflecting social change, and creating some of the most widely shared aesthetic experiences in human history. Studying it seriously requires combining performance skill with critical and historical understanding, and recognising that popular music is not a monolith but a constantly evolving set of practices, genres, and communities.
