Civil engineering is the discipline that designs and maintains the physical infrastructure societies depend on, from roads and bridges to drainage systems, coastal defences, and structural frameworks for buildings. It requires a command of applied mathematics and physics, an understanding of materials and their behaviour, and the ability to manage complex projects within real constraints of budget, time, and regulation. The discipline demands both technical precision and practical judgement, and civil engineers typically develop much of their professional competence through workplace experience as much as through formal study.
