Chemistry and physics together constitute the two most fundamental natural sciences, sharing deep mathematical foundations and each illuminating aspects of the world that the other cannot fully address alone. Chemistry investigates matter and its transformations, from atomic structure and chemical bonding through reaction mechanisms and thermodynamics to the synthesis of complex molecules. Physics examines the fundamental laws that govern energy, motion, space, and time, from the quantum realm to the cosmological scale. Studied together, they provide one of the most rigorous and intellectually demanding scientific educations available. At Durham University, this three-year full-time degree develops foundational knowledge and practical skills in both chemistry and physics, linking academic theory with practical laboratory experience taught by subject discipline specialists in both fields
