Geography is one of the most integrative of the sciences, connecting the physical processes that shape the planet with the human systems that organise societies across it. Physical geography examines landforms, climates, ecosystems and environmental processes. Human geography explores how people, communities and institutions use, transform and relate to the spaces and environments they inhabit. What makes geography distinctive is the insistence on understanding the connections between these two dimensions, which makes it especially relevant to the most pressing challenges of the present moment, including climate change, urbanisation, resource management and social inequality.
