About this course

Marine biology is the study of life in the ocean and other saltwater environments, from the microorganisms that form the base of marine food webs to the great whales at the top of them, and from the biodiversity of coral reefs to the organisms adapted to the darkness and cold of the deep sea. The oceans cover more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface and are central to the global climate system, the carbon cycle, and the provision of food for billions of people. Understanding the marine environment, and the effects of human activity on it, is one of the defining scientific challenges of the present century.
