Biomaterials and tissue engineering is a field that sits at one of the most consequential frontiers of modern science and medicine, concerned with creating materials and constructs that can interact with, repair, or replace biological tissue in the human body. The discipline draws on materials science, biology, chemistry, and engineering to understand how synthetic and natural materials behave in physiological environments, and to design systems ranging from drug delivery nanoparticles and diagnostic biosensors to engineered scaffolds that support the growth of replacement tissue.
