Environmental civil engineering is the discipline concerned with designing, building, and managing infrastructure in ways that are both functional and environmentally responsible. Civil engineering provides the technical foundations: structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation systems, and construction management. The environmental dimension centres those technical skills on sustainability, resource efficiency, the management of environmental risk, and the challenge of building infrastructure that works with natural systems rather than against them. As climate change, resource scarcity, and growing urbanisation reshape the demands placed on infrastructure, environmental civil engineers are increasingly central to how societies adapt and develop.
