Journalism is the practice of gathering, verifying, and communicating information to public audiences, and it plays a fundamental role in a functioning democracy. Journalists hold power to account, provide citizens with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, give voice to stories that might otherwise go untold, and bear witness to events of public significance. The craft requires the ability to find and verify information under pressure, to ask the right questions, to write clearly and accurately for different audiences and formats, and to understand the ethical and legal responsibilities that come with the power to publish.
