About this course

Pure mathematics is the study of mathematical structures for their own sake, guided by the internal logic and beauty of the discipline rather than immediate application. It is a subject that demands and develops the highest levels of abstract reasoning, precision of thought, and creative intellectual engagement, and it has historically proved to be both profoundly satisfying as a pursuit and surprisingly useful when the world eventually catches up with ideas that seemed purely theoretical. At Imperial College, this three-year full-time programme is designed for students who wish to engage with mathematics at the deepest level. You will encounter concepts that build directly on A-level mathematics and others that introduce entirely new ways of thinking, entering the mathematical universe of analysis, algebra, topology, number theory, and geometry with the tools and rigour that profession
