About this course

Mental health nursing is a specialist nursing field dedicated to supporting people experiencing mental illness, emotional distress, and the challenges of living with conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and personality disorders. It is a profession that requires both clinical knowledge and exceptional interpersonal skill: mental health nurses work in therapeutic relationships with people who are often highly vulnerable, and the ability to communicate with compassion, empathy, and professional confidence is as important as clinical expertise. The profession has expanded significantly in recent years as recognition of the scale and importance of mental health need has grown. At the University of York, this three-year full-time degree prepares you for professional registration as a mental health nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
