About this course

Physics is the discipline that seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the natural world, from the behaviour of subatomic particles to the propagation of light, the mechanics of fluids, and the dynamics of complex systems. Studying physics to master's level takes you from the foundational principles you will already know towards the frontiers of research, where quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, statistical physics and condensed matter theory come together in ways that are intellectually demanding and practically important. At Heriot-Watt you will follow a five-year full-time MPhys programme that combines advanced physics education with an industrial placement in year four. The placement is a defining feature of this degree, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional environment in fields such as photonics, quantum technology or engineering. These are area
