Spanish and Linguistics

About this course
Spanish and linguistics is a combination that allows you to develop fluency in one of the world's most widely spoken languages while also developing a rigorous scientific understanding of how language itself works. Linguistics is the systematic study of language as a human phenomenon, examining sound systems, grammar, meaning, how language is used in social contexts, how it changes over time, and how it is acquired by children and learned by adults. Applied to Spanish, it gives you not just proficiency but a deep understanding of what that proficiency consists of and how it varies across the huge geographical and social range of the Spanish-speaking world. At Manchester Metropolitan University this four-year programme develops both the practical language skills and the theoretical linguistic knowledge you need to operate as a professional in cross-cultural and multilingual environments.
