About this course

Criminal justice is the study of the institutions, processes, and social dynamics that define how societies respond to crime. It encompasses policing, prosecution, courts, sentencing, prisons, and probation, as well as the broader questions of why societies criminalise certain behaviours, how they balance punishment and rehabilitation, and what justice means for those who are harmed by crime and for those who are caught up in the system. The policing specialism adds a particular focus on the role, methods, ethics, and challenges of police work in contemporary society. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of the West of Scotland leads to a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with criminal justice and policing in a different national context.
