Welsh and linguistics is a degree that develops deep competence in one of Europe's oldest living languages alongside a rigorous scientific understanding of how language itself works. Welsh is the native language of Wales, spoken by more than half a million people, and it is a language of considerable historical and literary depth, with a tradition of poetry stretching back to the sixth century and a living contemporary culture that includes literature, music, film, and broadcasting. Linguistics brings the tools of systematic language analysis to bear on questions of sound, grammar, meaning, and social variation, developing an understanding of language as a human phenomenon and of Welsh as a particular case within that broader picture.
