Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining the essential infrastructure of modern societies: roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, water systems, flood defences, buildings and the foundations on which everything else rests. Civil engineers work on some of the most complex and consequential projects in any society, combining rigorous structural, hydraulic and geotechnical analysis with the creative problem-solving needed to deliver built environments that are safe, durable, sustainable and fit for purpose. The profession is increasingly focused on sustainability, resilience and the challenge of maintaining and improving ageing infrastructure while meeting the demands of a changing climate.
