It is a field that combines rigorous engagement with the history, politics, society, and culture of the region with the development of practical intercultural and analytical skills. East Asia is home to some of the world's most significant economies, most complex diplomatic relationships, and most distinctive cultural traditions, and understanding it requires both depth in individual country studies and the ability to think comparatively across the region.
