Ecology and conservation is the science of living systems and the urgent effort to protect them. Ecology studies the relationships between organisms and their environments, examining how species interact with each other and with the physical world, how energy and nutrients flow through food webs, and how populations, communities, and ecosystems change over time. Conservation applies that ecological understanding to the practical challenge of protecting biodiversity and managing the habitats on which wild species depend, at a time when human activity has driven unprecedented rates of species loss and ecosystem degradation.
