English Literature and History is a combination that goes to the heart of humanistic inquiry, bringing together the study of how people have imagined and expressed experience through literary form with the rigorous investigation of how the world has actually changed over time. The two disciplines are in constant dialogue: literature is a historical artefact, shaped by the social, political, and economic conditions of its moment, while history is itself a form of writing, a narrative art that involves selection, interpretation, and the shaping of a past into something that can be told and understood.
