Zoology is the scientific study of animal life in all its extraordinary diversity, and it is a discipline that has never been more important. The accelerating loss of biodiversity, the fragmentation of habitats, and the complex interactions between human land use and wildlife populations make the understanding that zoologists bring genuinely urgent. At the same time, zoology remains one of the most intellectually satisfying of the life sciences, offering the pleasures of close observation, experimental investigation, and the development of ideas about how animals work and why they have evolved as they have.
