About this course
Chemical engineering applies the principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology to the design and operation of processes that convert raw materials into useful products at industrial scale. Where chemistry is concerned primarily with what reactions are possible, chemical engineering asks how those reactions can be carried out safely, efficiently, and economically in continuous industrial processes. The discipline covers the design of reactors, separation systems, heat exchangers, and control systems, and it is central to industries ranging from pharmaceuticals and food production to petrochemicals, water treatment, polymers, and emerging clean energy technologies.
