About this course

Danish and German may seem like an unusual pairing, but the combination has genuine intellectual coherence. Both are North Germanic and West Germanic languages respectively, descended from ancient common roots, and studying them together allows you to observe how languages that share an ancestor have diverged over centuries into distinct linguistic systems with their own literatures, cultures, and social histories. Denmark and the German-speaking countries, meanwhile, are significant neighbours in Northern and Central Europe, with interconnected histories and contemporary partnerships across trade, culture, and politics. At University College London this four-year joint honours programme is split equally between Danish and German throughout.
