About this course

English as a discipline takes the full range of writing in the English language seriously as an object of scholarly attention and critical appreciation. It develops the skills of close reading, historical contextualisation, and analytical argument that come from sustained engagement with literature, asking how texts work, how they make meaning, and what they reveal about the societies and minds that produced them. A degree in English is also a powerful training in thinking, writing, and communicating, capabilities that are valued across virtually every profession. At Birmingham Newman University, this three-year full-time BA English offers a vibrant and socially engaged exploration of texts and ideas, from classic literature to contemporary media.
