About this course

Film and media studies is the critical and analytical examination of two of the most pervasive cultural forces of the modern world. Cinema, television, journalism, social media and digital platforms shape how people understand politics, identity, history and society, and the tools to analyse them critically are increasingly important. Film studies brings close attention to the visual and narrative language of moving images; media studies broadens this to encompass the institutions, industries, technologies and audiences that produce and consume all forms of media. Together they provide a rigorous framework for understanding contemporary culture. At Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, you will develop the skills to read films and media texts analytically, to understand the industries that produce them and the social contexts that shape their meanings.
