About this course

International relations and politics is the academic study of power in the world, examining both the dynamics between states in the international system and the domestic political processes through which governments make decisions and exercise authority. International relations asks how states interact, how wars start and end, what drives economic interdependence and conflict, how international institutions work, and how non-state actors from multinational corporations to terrorist organisations shape global affairs. Politics analyses power within states, covering electoral systems, political parties, ideologies, constitutions, and the processes through which societies govern themselves. At the University of Portsmouth you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a foundation year to provide academic preparation before the main degree. A sandwich year, a year abroad
