Philosophy and Linguistics at Oxford is one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding combinations available in the humanities. Philosophy asks the deepest questions about knowledge, reality, mind, ethics, and the nature of rationality. Linguistics is the scientific study of language: its structure, its acquisition, its diversity across human communities, and its relationship to thought and meaning. The two disciplines converge on some of the most fundamental and fascinating questions in all of intellectual inquiry. What is the relationship between language and thought? Can the same proposition be expressed in every language? What makes something a meaningful utterance rather than mere noise? How do we communicate so much with so little?
