Quantum technology is one of the most exciting and consequential frontiers in contemporary science, applying the counterintuitive principles of quantum mechanics to develop technologies that could transform computing, communications, sensing, and medicine in the coming decades. Quantum computers exploit superposition and entanglement to solve certain classes of problem far faster than any classical machine. Quantum cryptography enables communications that are in principle unbreakable. Quantum sensors can measure physical quantities with unprecedented precision. The physics underlying these technologies is well-established, but the engineering challenge of translating it into reliable, scalable devices is substantial and still being met.
