About this course

Physics and geology together span two of the most fundamental ways of understanding the Earth: from the outside in and from the inside out. Physics provides the mathematical and experimental tools to understand matter, energy, force, and motion at every scale, from subatomic particles to planetary systems. Geology applies those principles to the materials and processes of the Earth itself, reading the record of rock and mineral formations to reconstruct a history stretching back billions of years. Combining them gives you access to geophysics, the branch of science that uses seismic waves, gravitational measurements, and electromagnetic methods to probe the Earth's interior, and to the physical principles underlying everything from volcanic eruptions and earthquake dynamics to the formation of ore deposits and the modelling of past climates.
