About this course

Sociology is the systematic scientific study of human society, examining how social structures, institutions, cultures, and processes shape human behaviour and life chances. It asks why poverty and inequality persist, how norms and identities are formed and enforced, how institutions such as schools, the media, and the criminal justice system function, and how social change happens. It is a discipline that refuses to take the social world for granted, insisting instead on asking critical questions about the arrangements we often take as natural or inevitable and exploring how they might be different. At Manchester Metropolitan University this three-year full-time programme is aimed at students who are curious about how socialisation has shaped human beings and who want to understand and address pressing social problems, from poverty and inequality to crime and political corruption.
