Marine biology is the scientific study of life in the ocean, one of the most complex and least understood ecosystems on earth. It encompasses the biology of organisms from microscopic plankton to whales, the ecology of habitats from coral reefs and deep-sea vents to coastal salt marshes, and the processes by which marine systems respond to human pressures including pollution, overfishing, and climate change. At a moment when ocean health has rarely been more urgently relevant, marine biology offers both intellectual richness and practical purpose. At Southampton you will study all major forms of marine life, from the molecular and cellular level up through organisms, populations, and ecosystems.
