Archaeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the material traces that people have left behind, from ancient monuments and buried settlements to everyday objects and environmental remains. It is a discipline that combines the humanities and the sciences, asking both interpretive questions about meaning and identity and empirical questions about chronology, environment, and technology. At its heart, archaeology is about recovering and understanding the full depth of human experience, including the many thousands of years before written records begin.
