Veterinary medicine and surgery is a demanding and rewarding profession that requires the combination of deep scientific knowledge, practical clinical skills, strong communication ability and the emotional resilience to manage complex and sometimes distressing situations. Vets diagnose and treat disease and injury across a wide range of animal species, advise on preventive health, support public health surveillance for zoonotic diseases and work in research that advances both animal and human medicine. The training required is among the most intensive in higher education, and the resulting qualification is among the most highly regarded.
