About this course

Computer science and mathematics at their highest level are not merely related disciplines but, in a fundamental sense, the same endeavour approached from different directions. Mathematics provides the language, the proof techniques, and the abstract structures that computer science builds on, while computer science provides concrete problems that motivate and apply mathematical thinking in new ways. As computing systems have grown in scale and complexity, the mathematical sophistication required to understand and improve them has grown correspondingly. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme is built on the recognition that mathematics forms the foundation of computer science. You will study the core areas of both disciplines in genuine depth: on the mathematics side, analysis, algebra, probability, statistics, and discrete mathematics; on the computer scienc
