Early childhood studies is concerned with the development, wellbeing, and education of children from birth to the age of eight, a period now widely recognised as the most critical in shaping cognitive, emotional, and social development across the whole lifespan. The discipline draws on developmental psychology, sociology, education, neuroscience, and public health to examine how children grow and learn, what environments and relationships support healthy development, and how policies and practices in early childhood settings can best serve children and families. It is both an academic discipline and a field with direct professional relevance for everyone who works with young children.
