History and sociology together examine human societies from complementary angles, history through the lens of time and change, sociology through the lens of structure, power and social process. History attends to the particular, to events, contexts and the contingencies that shaped specific outcomes, and it develops the habit of situating claims in their evidence and acknowledging the complexity of the past. Sociology provides theoretical frameworks for understanding how societies are organised, how inequalities are reproduced, how institutions shape behaviour and how collective life generates patterns that transcend the intentions of individuals.
