Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest and most fundamental of the engineering disciplines, concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture, and operation of mechanical systems from the very small to the very large. It draws on physics, mathematics, materials science, and thermodynamics to address questions about how forces and energy are transformed, how components are designed to withstand the loads placed on them, and how systems from engines and turbines to robots and medical devices are built to function reliably. Mechanical engineers work in virtually every sector of the economy, making this degree one of the most versatile in engineering.
